2004 Results

The 2004 version of the Utah Sky Trials was a great success!  You know it was a good day when you wish you had smeared on your sunscreen, and your soda didn’t freeze!  There were many excellent flights. The birds flew high and the pigeons flew fast.  Friday was a day for sun glasses, while Saturday had more of a chilly edge to it with a slight breeze.  The birds didn’t mind and put on a great show.

Tyler Stiens, Steve Smith, and Shawn Hayes battled again this year for the top spots. Tyler repeated his success from last year again taking first place, while Steve Smith (former band member of ZZ Top?) taking second, and Shawn Hayes taking the third and fourth places.

Both days were great for spectators and flyers alike. There were hot snacks and hot commentary by the world famous (at least in the Uinta Basin) Howard Brinkerhoff.  As usual there was a fine assortment of birds available for a closer look.  These included a

Golden Eagle,  Great Horned Owl, Harris hawk, Red-tail, Northern Goshawk, Kestrel, Prairie Falcon, Gyrfalcon, Peregrine, hybrids of every variety and a medley of Merlins. (see 2004 picture gallery.)

I (Shayne Clarke) served as the head judge this year, and just want to tell all the participants how much I appreciated their support as we judged their flights.  I felt no ill will, and speaking for Alan Kirk and the other judges, we had a good time out there with you.

The banquet and raffle were also a great time to put down some calories and tell lies about falconry.  There were many excellent items donated from many generous sources which made for a fun time.

Our deepest thanks for all who donated time and money, and who have helped to carry on this wonderful falconry tradition.  Special thanks to Patrick Shane who knew Gerald well, and who is dedicated to not only carrying on this tradition, but making it even more exciting in the years to come.

Plans for the 2005 version of the Utah Sky Trials are already under way.  It will be held February 3rd, 4th and 5th.  Details are posted on this site and will continue to be updated throughout the year.

Please send us your comments and suggestions so we can continue to improve the Utah Sky Trials.  May your birds fly to your expectations, and may your expectations be high!

We look forward to seeing you next year!
