2012 – Rohn Peterson’s Falcon Killed by Eagle.

Rohn Peterson’s Falcon Killed by Eagle. As you may have heard, tragedy struck at the Sky Trials on Friday. Rohn Peterson’s falcon Saber flew out of sight and caught the attention of one of the eagles who watch our flights from the clouds. Rohn and others tracked down the radio signal and when they found Saber, he had been killed by an eagle.

In Nature these are not tragedies, it’s just how it works. The falcon was hunting for its meal and so was the eagle. Unfortunately, the eagle’s meal was Saber. But for those of us who get to step into Nature and experience it first hand, losing a hunting partner is a tragedy and is painful.

As falconers, we understand the risk when we engage in this dramatic art. We know every time we fly our falcons it may be our last flight together. For Rohn and his falcon Saber on Friday, it was. Rohn will gear up and in due time train another falcon. He will again invest the time to train and develop a new bird.

And while Saber’s loss will always be present, Rohn will draw from the memories of past flights. Such memories and the dreams of future flights with another falcon drive us to continue in this alluring sport.
